Three young Lewisham residents will exhibit their first-ever artwork at Deptford Does Art as part of the upcoming Deptford X Festival on Deptford High Street.
The exhibits are the product of a 16-week screen-printing course run by our ArtHouse Project. The young artists worked with Single Homeless Project’s creative arts team, community-based screen printer Liam Richardson, and artist Caitlin O’Reilly to learn print-making techniques, including screen-printing, lino-printing, contact prints, and mixed media.
Exhibiting under the name Manus in Manu Print Collective, the artists have created prints, tote bags, and clothing for sale, all themed ‘The Origin’. Profits will go directly to the three young artists, and the items can be bought at Deptford Does Art.
The launch event will be hosted at Deptford Does Art on 17 September, 5-8 pm, with music performances by young musicians from Single Homeless Project.
Young talent on display
Meg O’Malley, Arthouse Manager at Single Homeless Project, said: “We believe that everyone has the right and potential to make great art, and this exhibition is proof of that. I’m proud of our young artists. The screen-printing course has given them a chance to explore their creativity, build confidence, and develop relationships. Putting on an exhibition has also shown real entrepreneurial spirit, and I have no doubt that this experience will inspire them into arts-focused education and employment.”
Bradley, one of the young artists from Lewisham, has enjoyed the experience, which exceeded his expectations. He said: “I was just looking for something to do when I joined the course, but it has really helped me find my creativity. I’m looking forward to seeing the response of visitors who see our work.”
Zuzana Greenham, Owner/Founder of Deptford Does Art, looks forward to using the exhibition to show that art is for everyone.
