Housing First

Everyone has a right to a safe and stable place to call home.

This is the belief and principle that the Housing First model is based on. And it’s been proven to be highly successful around the world. This approach to ending homelessness gives people who are long-term rough sleepers with other overlapping needs:

  • a stable home from the outset
  • intensive, tailored support that emphasises choice and control
  • no judgement or pre-conditions

Research demonstrates that 80-90% of those supported through this model remain in housing after two years. People’s health and well-being improve, contact with services is reduced, and they generally feel more included in society.

Single Homeless Project was among the first organisations in the UK to adopt the Housing First model, launching a pioneering pilot in Camden in 2013. Since then, this approach has been adopted nationwide and has become a core part of our work. We deliver the Housing First approach in Islington, Redbridge, and East London. We have achieved enormous success for our clients who have experienced repeat homelessness or who are leaving prison.

Housing First is underpinned by a number of key principles:

  • People have a right to a home
  • Flexible support is provided for as long as it’s needed
  • Housing is not conditional on support
  • Individuals have choice and control over their support
  • The service is based on people’s strengths, goals and hopes
  • Support is proactive and person-centred

Everyone, no matter how many challenges they face, has the right to a place they can call home. Housing First is a powerful, compelling, and effective expression of this principle, offering not just housing but dignity, respect, and hope for a better future.
