Tisha’s story*

Tisha’s life looks a little different to last year – and we couldn’t be prouder of her. Within a year, 18-year-old Tisha has gone from homelessness to getting a place of her own. Her journey proves just how life-changing our services can be when someone is given the support they need and the chance to move forward.

Tisha has faced incredibly tough times as a teenager, managing family mental health struggles whilst also facing the loss of several beloved family members. When she could no longer live with her mum, Tisha spent six months sleeping on a relative’s sofa.

Single Homeless Project then received her referral. After phone calls and meetings with Annabelle, one of our incredible youth caseworkers, Tisha began to trust that moving to our youth hostel at 18 was right for her. Annabelle offered hope that things could get better and that she wouldn’t give up on Tisha.

“I was paranoid when I first came here, but Annabelle got me to trust her by making me feel comfortable and making me know that we were here at Single Homeless Project for me and nothing else.”

After six months at Single Homeless Project, Tisha has grown into an incredibly mature 18-year-old who has an amazing outlook on life. Inspired by her own experiences, she aspires to a career in which she can support other young people facing similar challenges.

Through therapy, her love of writing, and a deep commitment to self-reflection, she’s made huge progress. Now, she’s ready to start the next chapter – finding a place of her own. With our support, she now feels confident in her ability to live independently – from mastering a delicious butter chicken to learning that cleaning isn’t fun but essential!

“It’s nerve-racking, as obviously I haven’t lived by myself before. But it’s a process that has to happen, and I’m happy I’ve gone through it this way to understand and learn everything without being too independent all at once. It’s kind of made me become more confident in myself and my decisions. I’m really excited about having my own place to decorate. I’d love to have a vintage vibe. Oh! And the walls have to be covered in colour and art!”

Tisha’s grit and determination are admirable. She also has some advice for other young people who may be going through a tough time.

While she’s excited for her next chapter, we’re mindful that the months ahead can be difficult. But we’ll continue to be there for her, no matter what.

We’re incredibly proud of Tisha and are so excited to check in with her and hear more of her successes!
